What is Global Forest Watch?

GFL student participants use Global Forest Watch when researching their local forest.

Global Forest Watch (GFW) is an online forest monitoring system that empowers people everywhere to better manage and conserve forests. Their website includes news about forest conservation problems and breakthroughs as well as forest statistics that anyone can use to make their own applications. Users can see detailed information about forests in their country of interest or compare across countries with the Country Profiles and Rankings tool.

Arguably the most important tool GFW provides is the interactive map made with satellite imaging. It allows users to see forest cover, forest cover change over time, land use, and conservation around the world. Users can also zoom in to view more specific information about a certain area.

The next several tutorials will provide more information about GFW and how we use it in the Global Forest Link project.
